Devenez Vendangeur d'un Jour® / Become Grape picker for a day

Oenotourisme

Grape picking, a tour of the vineyards and the wine press, treading the grapes by foot… During the grape harvest, the winegrowers open their doors to you and invite you to experience their craft for a day – become a grape picker for a day!

Being a grape picker for a day is...

Putting yourself in a winegrower’s shoes at this very special time of year

The role of a winegrower is often reduced to the harvest alone. Although somewhat simplistic, this view is not entirely wrong: the harvest is indeed the culmination of a whole year’s work in the vineyard!

Throughout the year, the winegrower has walked the length and breadth of their plots, monitoring and tending their vines until the grapes reach maturity. Then comes that intense moment when everything speeds up – the moment of truth: the grapes must be picked at just the right time, the weather must be managed, teams must be mobilised, and everyone must embrace this collective buzz.

The atmosphere takes on a special quality, the baskets fill up, and lively conversations take place amongst the rows. Every bunch harvested holds within it the promise of the future vintage.

Step into the world of the winegrower and share in their daily life

During the grape harvest, everyone has their own role: the pickers, equipped with secateurs, pick the bunches; the porters carry the baskets and crates to the end of each row of vines; and the tractor drivers transport the day’s harvest to the press and the sorting table, where the grapes are selected. The stewards prepare the harvesters’ famous meals and snacks!

And, above all, an unrivalled atmosphere, characterised by new encounters and a warm, friendly atmosphere

Taking part in the grape harvest means discovering the very essence of the winemaker’s craft: that alchemy between a whole year’s patient labour and the thrill of the harvest. It’s an authentic experience that few have the chance to enjoy. So, grab your secateurs!

FAQ – EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO BECOME A ‘VENDANGEUR D'UN JOUR®’

‘Vendangeur d’un jour®’ is a wine tourism experience offered by independent winegrowers during the grape harvest. It gives visitors the chance to discover their trade, try their hand at harvesting grapes and understand the initial stages of the winemaking process.

Yes. ‘Vendangeur d’un jour®’ is a registered trademark of Vignerons Indépendants de France. It refers to a supervised wine tourism experience offered by estates authorised to use the trademark.

The programme varies from estate to estate. It may include:

a welcome and introduction to the estate;

an exploration of the terroir and grape varieties;

an introduction to the techniques of grape harvesting;

picking a few bunches of grapes from a designated plot;

a tour of the press house, the vat room or the cellar;

explanations of the winemaking process;

a tasting of the estate’s wines;

a light snack or a convivial meal;

the presentation of a ‘Vendangeur d’un jour®’ certificate.

Each winegrower tailors the experience to suit their estate, their organisation and the schedule of the grape harvest.

This is a tourist experience designed to provide an insight into the vineyard, rather than work carried out for the estate. Participation is one-off, time-limited and takes place in a small section of the vineyard, with no focus on yield or productivity.

Participants learn the techniques involved in the grape harvest, but they never replace a member of staff and are not part of the production team.

No. No knowledge of wine or experience of the grape harvest is required. The independent winegrower will introduce his estate, explain the procedures and guide participants throughout the activity.

These experiences are offered during the grape harvest, usually between late summer and autumn. The timing varies depending on the region, the grape varieties, the ripeness of the grapes and the weather conditions.

The final dates may sometimes not be known until late, as the winegrower has to wait until the grapes have reached the desired level of ripeness.

Check the list of participating estates in the region you are interested in. Dates and availability are specified on the estate’s website, on the regional federation’s website, or by contacting the tourism provider offering the package.

Where dates have not yet been confirmed, some estates may offer pre-registration.

Bookings are made directly with the participating estate, unless another booking method is expressly stated in the offer details.

Once you have chosen your region and estate, contact the estate by telephone, email or via its online booking system. The estate will confirm the date, the programme, the number of places available and the terms and conditions of participation.

Vignerons Indépendants de France does not centralise individual bookings.

Booking is usually required. Group sizes are deliberately kept small to ensure the safety of participants and to allow for meaningful interaction with the winegrower.

We therefore advise against turning up at the estate without prior confirmation.

Each estate is free to set its own programme and prices. The price depends, amongst other things, on the duration, the activities on offer, and whether a wine tasting, a light snack or a meal is included.

Please check the experience details or contact the estate directly to find out the exact details and price.

The duration varies depending on the package chosen by the estate. The experience may last a few hours, half a day or, in some cases, extend to include a meal.

The times and duration are specified at the time of booking.

Some resorts welcome children and teenagers accompanied by an adult, whilst others set a minimum age. This decision depends on the programme, the terrain, the equipment used and safety requirements.

It is essential to check this directly with the resort before booking. No alcoholic drinks are served to minors.

Yes. You don’t need to drink wine to learn about the grape harvest and the winemaker’s craft. If the package includes a wine tasting, you are free to choose not to take part. Depending on the estate, grape juice or other non-alcoholic drinks may be available.

It is generally recommended that you bring:

  • closed-toe shoes suitable for walking in the vineyard;
  • comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting stained;
  • rainwear if the weather is uncertain;
  • a hat or cap;
  • a water bottle;
  • sun cream if necessary.

The estate may provide further instructions at the time of booking.

The arrangements vary depending on the vineyard. Pruning shears or any other equipment required for the introductory session may be provided on site. Please check the information provided when you book and do not bring your own equipment without the winegrower’s permission.

Accessibility depends on the layout of the estate, the plot, the terrain and the proposed programme. Some estates may be able to adapt part of the experience.

Please contact the estate directly before booking to explain your requirements and check the access conditions.

Weather conditions, the condition of the vineyard and the ripeness of the grapes may lead the estate to alter, postpone or cancel the event. An alternative activity may sometimes be offered: an in-depth tour of the cellar, a look at the wine press, a workshop on the vintage or a guided tasting.

The terms and conditions regarding postponement or refunds are specified by each organiser.

The grape harvest is an activity that depends on the weather. The start date is decided based on the ripeness of the grapes, the weather, the health of the bunches and the style of wine we are aiming for.

Taking part in ‘Vendangeur d’un jour®’ also means discovering this reality: in the vineyard, the schedule has to adapt to the grapes.

Some estates welcome families, groups of friends, organisations or companies. However, capacity remains limited.

For group bookings, please contact the estate directly well in advance so that we can discuss the dates, programme and organisational arrangements.

The scheme is available in several wine-growing regions, including Champagne, Alsace, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Centre-Val de Loire, Drôme and Vaucluse. The list of participating regions and estates may change each year.

Please check the regional links on this page to find out about the offers available.

You can choose based on the region, the wines produced, the programme, the duration, child-friendly facilities, accessibility or whether a meal is included.

Each estate offers a different experience. Take a look at what’s on offer and then contact them directly to check that it meets your expectations.

Select your region from the list on this page, view the participating estates, then contact your chosen estate directly to obtain the latest information and make a booking.

Dates, programmes, capacity and terms and conditions may vary depending on the actual harvest schedule.

A paid grape picker is recruited by a vineyard to carry out work required for the harvest. They contribute to production, follow the employer’s instructions and receive remuneration. They must be registered and have an appropriate employment contract.

‘Vendangeur d’un jour®’ is a completely different concept. Participants do not come to provide labour or to replace a salaried employee. They are purchasing a wine tourism experience, similar to a tour or a workshop.

The experience may include a welcome from the winegrower, an introduction to the terroir, an introduction to the techniques of the harvest in a small, designated area, an exploration of the wine press and the winemaking process, a tour of the cellar, a tasting or a social gathering.

Participation in the harvest is brief, educational, supervised and has no yield target. It is not necessary for the estate’s harvest to take place.

The price therefore reflects the time spent on welcoming guests and sharing knowledge, organising the activity and providing the various services on offer. A paid grape picker works for the estate and must be paid; a ‘Vendangeur d’un jour®’ comes to enjoy a leisure experience and pays to discover the trade.
