(C) Vignerons Indépendants 2025 - Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health, consume with moderation.
Wine tourism refers to all the tourist activities offered by wine estates: cellar tours, wine tastings, workshops, hands-on grape harvesting or stays at the estate.
For the Vignerons IndĂ©pendants de France, wine tourism is not merely a tourist activity: we see it as a form of winemakerâs hospitality.
It involves welcoming visitors to a living workplace, sharing expertise and facilitating a direct encounter with the producer who cultivates their vines, makes their wine and markets it under their own name.
Why use the plural form of âhospitalityâ? Because behind the generic term âwine tourismâ lie infinitely diverse human realities. Each independent winegrower expresses their art of hospitality in their own way:
These wine-growersâ hospitality reflects the personality of each producer, the identity of their terroir, and the richness of our network of 5,000 independent winegrowers.
Wine tourism thus becomes much more than a simple tourist activity: it is a human encounter, a passing on of passion, a sharing of values.
Â
Wineries offer a range of tour options to suit all types of visitor.
A spontaneous visit to a vineyard
Duration: 30 minutes to 1 hour
Atmosphere: Friendly, authentic, informal
Booking: Often possible without an appointment
You step through the gates of a vineyard, where the winegrower introduces you to their wines and shares insights into their craft. Itâs a simple, friendly and authentic tasting experience.
It is hospitality in its simplest and most genuine form. The winemaker pauses for a moment from their work to introduce you to a few wines, answer your questions and share a glimpse into their daily life.
No fuss, no prepared speech: just the pleasure of conversation and sharing knowledge. This form of welcome carries on the historic tradition of French family-run estates.
Guided tour of the estate
Duration: 1 to 2 hours
Nature of the tour: Educational, immersive, insightful
Booking: Recommended or compulsory
Usually includes a tour of the vineyards and the wine storehouse, plus a guided tasting.
Here, hospitality is more organised without losing its authenticity. The winemaker or a member of the team guides you through the estateâs key areas: vineyards, wine storehouse, ageing cellars, fermentation vatsâŠ
Each estate tailors these tours to its own unique characteristics: a historical tour of century-old vaulted cellars, a technical tour of an ultra-modern winery, a sensory walk through the vineyards, or an environmental exploration of a biodynamic estate⊠The tour concludes with an in-depth tasting that helps you understand the link between terroir, winemaking and the wineâs style.
Immersive wine tourism experiences
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes or more
Atmosphere: Memorable, interactive, transformative
Booking: often required
Audience: wine enthusiasts and curious visitors seeking a fully immersive experience
These experiences offer a hands-on insight into the winemakerâs work and the annual cycle of the vineyard: youâre no longer just visiting, youâre experiencing the estate from the inside. These immersive experiences turn visitors into active participants:

Many winegrowers carry on the tradition of a warm, spontaneous welcome. A quick phone call or a drop-in visit is often all it takes. Do give it a go!
Â
As well as welcoming visitors to their estates, independent winegrowers extend their hospitality at events that bring our regions to life.
When : Every Whitsun weekend
The principle: Visitors bring their own food; the estate offers wine tastings and, on occasion, one or more activities.
Every year, several hundred estates open their doors for one or more days of conviviality in the open air. This communal and festive event brings together families, friends, regulars and newcomers in a relaxed atmosphere. Take a seat amongst the vines, enjoy the setting, and meet the winemaker and other wine enthusiasts. Winemakersâ hospitality at its simplest and most generous.
Â
When: Every autumn
The experiment: Experience the grape harvest from the inside, alongside the winegrowers
Here, hospitality takes on an active form: youâre no longer just a visitor, youâre taking part. Pick the grapes alongside the winegrower and their team, gain an understanding of the demands of this crucial moment, share a meal with the grape-pickers, and savour the previous yearâs vintage. An authentic immersion in the intense daily life of the harvest.
Â
Open days, winegrowersâ markets, open cellars, festivals, tasting evenings, events in wine-growing villages⊠Throughout the year, every region sees dozens of initiatives organised by our winegrowers springing up. These local hospitality events forge links between producers and local residents, and between visitors and the regions.
Â
Despite their diversity, all these forms of hospitality are based on shared values that define the identity of independent winegrowers.
Our winegrowers welcome you into their everyday workplace, not a tourist attraction. What you see is their reality: working cellars, tools of the trade, and sometimes even the creative chaos of a cellar in the midst of winemaking. This authenticity lies at the heart of our approach to hospitality.
You will be welcomed by the very person who planted the vines, harvested the grapes and made the wine. This direct relationship between producer and visitor ensures a genuine exchange and a true sharing of knowledge.
Many estates are involved in environmental initiatives such as:
During the tours, the winegrowers explain their cultivation methods and technical choices: they explain their decisions, demonstrate their practical methods in the vineyards, and help you understand their vision of the trade. Youâll therefore leave not only with some wine, but also with a better understanding of the challenges of sustainable viticulture and climate resilience.
Winegrowersâ hospitality is about the desire to share their passion, their expertise and their history. Winegrowers do not simply sell wine: they share a little of their world, forge connections and tell the stories of their terroirs. This generosity is reflected in the time they set aside, the attention they give to each visitor and the patience they show in explaining things.
